Microchip Your Pet For Permanent Identification

 WHAT IS A MICROCHIP?

A microchip is a tiny device – about the size of a grain of rice – which has a unique and unalterable identification number programmed into it.  It is small enough to fit inside of a syringe needle and is simply injected under the skin, between the shoulder blades.  The microchip remains at this site within the tissues and muscles.  The chip is in no way dangerous or painful to your pet and is an easy and painless way to provide permanent identification for your pet.  The microchip is simply injected under the skin in the shoulder area of your pet.  This can be done in an office visit and is just like having an injection for a vaccine or medication.

 HOW DOES A MICROCHIP WORK?

The microchip is a “passive electronic device”.  This means that the chip itself does not give out any sort of electronic activity on its own.  Once implanted, the microchip remains inactive until read with a hand-held scanner.  The scanner sends a low frequency signal to the chip, providing the power needed by the microchip to send its code (your pet’s individual identification number) back to the scanner.

WHY SHOULD A PET BE MICROCHIPPED?

It only takes a second for a pet to slip out an open door or gate or for someone to inadvertently let a pet “escape”.  Statistics show that one out of every three family pets will be lost.  It can be heart wrenching to discover that your faithful friend and companion is missing.

Visual tags often become lost, misplaced, or can be removed if someone has stolen your pet.  The microchip is a permanent form of identification that will stay with your pet forever.  The majority of SPCA’s and Humane Associations and many veterinarians have scanners and they will scan animals brought into them, thereby enabling them to determine the ownership of the animal and enabling them to get your pet back home to you.

WHAT IF MY PET BECOMES LOST?

AKC Companion Animal Recovery is a 24 hour-a-day nationwide pet identification and recovery service utilizing a central database that records identification numbers.  When a pet is found that has been microchipped, the registration service is contacted through an 800 phone number and within minutes, your   pet can be identified.  Only if you have registered your pet’s microchip number can your identity and contact information be located so that your pet can be returned to you.  This is why registration is vital.  If you do not register your pet, it makes it difficult for anyone to find you!

Using a scanner the identity of the chip can be located in the event that your pet becomes lost.

The chip number is displayed on the screen and someone can then call the national centers for registration of the chip to begin the process of getting your pet back home to you!!!  If no chip is found, the scanner will say “No ID Found” and there will be no way for anyone to contact you.  Don’t let this happen to your pet.

The process is very simple and cost effective.

Please call our office today to schedule an appointment to have your pet microchipped.
